Public Safety Advocate by Andy Seybold, April 4, 2014

The week after the IWCE and CCA conferences provides an interesting mix of news. I want to welcome our new subscribers, each week more people continue to sign up for this weekly news service and we continue to receive comments thanking us for the updates. However, since the contract for several of us who served as consultants reporting directly to the FirstNet General Manager was not extended and NTIA/DOC has decided to replace us with other contractors, I have decided that it is time for me to bow out of the Public Safety communications arena. I had thought about staying involved in Public Safety but frankly, having been on the inside of FirstNet and having worked with the great team that had been assembled, it doesn’t seem exciting to me to go back to being on the outside and simply observing and commenting on what is going on. I will miss all of the great people I have met and interacted with over the past six-plus years I have been working at helping to secure the Public Safety broadband spectrum. I will certainly miss the conferences and camaraderie that makes Public Safety so very special. However, I have done all I can for the cause, and now it is time for others to take over and move FirstNet forward. I will be returning to commercial wireless and hope to meet up with many of you again in the future.

I will continue to publish this weekly news alert and my Public Safety Advocate articles for as long as I can. However, several of my possible consulting opportunities would preclude the continuation of these news blasts and my Public Safety articles. I have published these weekly news updates almost every week since June of 2010 and I will continue to do so if at all possible. Meanwhile, I would like to point out a recent report to Congress that was submitted by the Congressional Research Service (CRS). This organization is part of the Library of Congress and Linda Moore, author of the report, has been following Public Safety Broadband since it was first being discussed in Washington six years ago. The report is an update of her previous reports and it is worth reading. I suggest that you make sure to read, at least the part that deals with “Governance” starting on page 24. The report is listed on NPSTC’s homepage as “CRS Publishes FirstNet Report to Congress on Broadband.” (http://www.npstc.org/index.jsp) Have a great weekend and coming week. Andy
