The Texas Approach to Broadband for Public Safety

In 2013, the Texas Public Safety Broadband Program (TxPSBP) received funding to engage in statewide outreach and education efforts. The initial phase of the program targets stakeholders, potential users and community leaders, providing these groups with information about the envisioned future of public safety broadband, as well as the nationwide and statewide programs. As an “early builder,” Texas is leading the way in increasing understanding of the potential of broadband for responders. They have also created a fantastic Web site. International Forum to Advance First Responder Innovation

As announced at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago from October 24 to 26, 2015, international partners (including the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate and Defence Research and Development Canada’s Centre for Security Science) established the International Forum to Advance First Responder Innovation. As the International Forum grows, it will serve as a forum to discuss shared first responder capability gaps, provide a platform for collaboration on R&D initiatives and solutions, characterize global first responder markets, and educate first responders about available technology. A clearly defined list of common capability gaps, along with a true understanding of the global market will provide the international first responder community a greater voice and will help motivate industry to create advanced technologies for first responders and deliver them at afford-able prices.
