The Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration announced the creation of a task force to develop recommendations for a registration process for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). During a press conference on October 19, 2015, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said registration would “build a culture of accountability and responsibility, especially with new users who have no experience operating in the U.S. aviation system.” If operators break the rules, “clearly there should be consequences,” he said. “But there can be no accountability if people cannot be identified.” Registration aims to address that problem.
The task force has been asked to complete recommendations by mid-November, Mr. Foxx said. The goal is to have rules in place by mid-December, he said. – Brian Hammond, brian.hammond@wolterskluwer.com
