Andy Seybold’s Pubic Safety Advocate, January 17, 2014

While there is some Public Safety communications news this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruling on Net Neutrality is making most of the headlines. Some see this as a set-back for the FCC, and for the Internet while others see it in a different light. But I believe that in the end this ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court so the issue will drag on for another few years.

In another piece of news not listed below, T-Mobile is its quest to gain an advantage in the 600 MHz (Incentive) auction, is now claiming that FirstNet and the Public Safety Broadband Network will be fully funded from the results of auctions being held in 2014 for the AWS-3 and other spectrum. They have taken this posture to continue their push to get the FCC to give smaller network operators a bidding advantage for the 100 MHz or more of 600 MHz spectrum which will, at this point, be auctioned in 2015. Have a great week-end
Andy

Verizon, AT&T Win In Latest Net Neutrality RulingInvestor’s Business Daily
Jan 14 16:00 The FCC can’t impose Net neutrality rules, a somewhat divided appeals court ruled Tuesday, casting the future of Internet services up in the air. In a big win for Verizon Communications (VZ), AT&T (T) and other broadband providers, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, in a ruling that was 2-1 in part, found that the Federal Communications Commission lacks the authority to impose so-called Net neutrality rules, since

Your ISP probably can’t wait to try out AT&T’s Sponsored Data schemeBoy Genius Report
Jan 10 12:45 It’s easy to see why ISPs and carriers would love AT&T’s Sponsored Data scheme ” after all, it gives them the ability to both slap subscribers with overage fees and extract rents from tech companies who are willing to pay fees so that their own users don’t get slapped with overage fees. Ars Technica reports that if AT&T’s Sponsored Data gambit is successful, it could lead to many home broadband providers trying to pull off similar plans by asking Netflix, Hulu and other high-bandwidth content providers to pay up to ensure that their subscribers don’t go over their data caps. “But…
